Qualcomm presents professor Kenji Yoshino's discussion on authenticity and allyship.
In this presentation, Professor Kenji Yoshino discusses authenticity and allyship. He contends that one of the headwinds subordinated groups face is the pressure to “cover,” or to downplay their outsider attributes to blend into the mainstream. Drawing on survey data, he shows that asking individuals to suppress their authentic selves in this manner has negative effects for both the person and the organization. Turning to solutions, he focuses on how allyship can help individuals overcome covering demands and more generally address other diversity and inclusion challenges that organizations confront.
