What we believe in:
We believe business ownership is the goal. We give our members the tools, education, and support to level up — whether that means scaling a business or stepping from employee to employer. SDEBA creates real opportunities through marketing and advertising, industry-focused groups, and high-energy networking and social events designed to help members grow. Most of all, we build a community rooted in “we,” not “me.”
Marriage equality was a milestone, but economic power is the future of LGBTQ progress. Workplace inequality and sanctioned discrimination still exist in many states, making workforce equity more critical than ever. SDEBA believes that as LGBTQ economic influence grows, so does our message: we will accept nothing less than full equality. 💪
LGBTQ consumers are fiercely loyal to brands that support equality, community, and workplace diversity. They choose businesses they trust — where values align and employees are treated fairly. Supporting LGBTQ-owned and allied businesses fuels economic growth — and with it, the power of true equality. 🌈💼

.
.
Founded in 1979, the San Diego Equality Business Association (formerly Greater San Diego Business Association GSDBA) continues to support small businesses in San Diego while advocating for mainstream acceptance of diversity.
We are one of the largest specialty chambers in San Diego County and the second oldest LGBTQ and supportive chamber in the nation. SDEBA prides itself on outreach to other business chambers and to society at large. In 2000 it was the first LGBT chamber in the nation to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the US Small Business Administration, recognizing our status as a minority business association.
A founding member of the NGLCC, SDEBA takes an active role in national level programs to meet the needs of small businesses. All members are automatically members of NGLCC, having access to financial, procurement and advocacy programs.
Diversity is the ground of creativity and strengthens us as an association. Membership with us is a powerful choice. Join us in contributing to the growth and prosperity of the San Diego region. We encourage and welcome membership from anyone who supports equality for all people and seeks the opportunities we can provide in business support, networking, advertising, professional growth and business resources.

The San Diego Equality Business Association promotes LGBTQ influence through business ownership, workforce equality and active consumerism, creating prosperity to support equality, diversity and inclusion.

Business Ownership
We believe business ownership is a core goal. We provide resources to educate members how to move their business to the next level, or to grow from being an employee to an employer. SDEBA offers marketing and advertising opportunities, industry-specific focus groups, and social and networking events for members to help build their businesses. We foster a culture that encourages a highly engaged and active membership - focused on the “We”, not the Me.
Workforce Equality
As attaining marriage equality has been important in the struggle for social and political rights, LGBTQ workforce equality and economic power is the key to the future of the LGBTQ movement. There continue to be incidences of workplace inequality, and (sanctioned) discrimination in many states. SDEBA believes the growing economic strength and buying power of the LGBTQ population sends the message that we will settle for nothing less than full equality.
Consumer Awareness
LGBT people spent nearly 850 billion dollars in (2014). They are loyal to brands that support LGBT rights, community causes, and workplace diversity. LGBT people to do business with companies they trust, and who support their values. They choose to do business where employees have equal rights and benefits. Consumer awareness and patronage of LGBT-owned and supportive businesses is key to growing overall economic prosperity - and with that, the power that comes with full economic equality.
At the San Diego Equality Business Association (SDEBA), our mission is simple yet impactful: We promote and elevate LGBTQ+ businesses through advocacy, partnership, and collaboration. By working closely with our members and sponsors, we foster an inclusive business community where diversity thrives. Our goal is to empower LGBTQ+ businesses and professionals by creating opportunities through education, networking, and strategic partnerships.
Vision:
We envision a thriving, equitable economy where LGBTQ+ businesses have the resources, support, and representation they need to succeed. Through advocacy and collaboration, we aim to remove barriers and create a space where all professionals—regardless of identity—can achieve their full potential.
Purpose:
Our purpose is to drive meaningful change for LGBTQ+ entrepreneurs by advocating for their rights, providing access to key resources, and building a collaborative network. Through our partnerships, we strive to empower business owners and create lasting impact within the San Diego business landscape.

Bob Lehman, Executive Director, San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus
For nearly 20 years, Bob Lehman has been an advocate for San Diego’s LGBT community. Following his service as a combat Marine sergeant, Lehman became a nationally recognized leader in the fight to end “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” founding San Diego’s chapter of American Veterans for Equal Rights, leading the first-ever contingent of gay veterans to march in San Diego’s Veteran’s Day Parade and serving as the first openly gay appointee to the County Veteran’s Advisory Board. Working with local veterans, Lehman co-founded the highly respected Stonewall Citizen’s Patrol in reaction to the brutal attacks against gay men outside the Pride Festival.
Lehman was also a leader in the fight for marriage equality including providing major funding and campaign offices against both antigay measures, Prop 22 and Prop 8. In 2008, Lehman and his husband Tom Felkner made history as the first two men to legally marry in California.
Today, Lehman serves as Executive Director and President Emeritus of the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. Under his leadership, the Chorus has doubled in size and dramatically increased its community outreach role. Just months ago, Mayor Faulconer honored Lehman and the Chorus with its own “SDGMC Day.”

Buying a franchise means purchasing a proven business model — established brand, built-in customers, and operational systems already tested in the market. Franchising employment grew by 2.2% in 2024, adding more than 189,000 jobs, with total franchise output projected to outpace the broader economy at $936.4 billion in 2025. For San Diego entrepreneurs, that momentum is real — but so are the contractual commitments and California-specific requirements that rarely appear in the sales pitch. The core value proposition is structure. You step into a system with established training protocols, supplier relationships, and brand recognition that can take years to build independently — a real head start over starting from scratch. The advantages are concrete: Reduced startup risk through an established brand and existing customer base Faster return on investment by entering a proven market Franchisor-provided training, operations manuals, and ongoing support Shared marketing and advertising costs across the franchise network Potential to expand by acquiring additional units over time That said, you're operating under the franchisor's standards, approved vendors, and brand guidelines. Limited autonomy is part of the deal — something worth understanding clearly before you commit. In practice: The structure that makes franchising lower-risk also means you trade operational flexibility for consistency. Initial franchise fees can range from tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of dollars before you account for equipment, lease deposits, and opening inventory. Then come royalty payments — a percentage of gross revenue paid to the franchisor throughout the life of the agreement. Financial transparency runs in both directions: franchisors typically have audit rights and regular reporting requirements, which means your financial data is shared with corporate. And if the parent brand faces a PR crisis or high-profile lawsuit nationally, your San Diego location absorbs the fallout regardless of how well your own operation is running. Non-compete clauses deserve particular attention. Franchise agreements typically last 10–20 years and restrict post-exit competition with specific timeframes and geographic limits that can survive the end of the business relationship itself. Every franchise sale requires disclosure. The Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD) covers 23 specific items: fees, territory rights, litigation history, franchisee contact information, and financial performance data. Reviewing it carefully is non-negotiable — but one rule catches a lot of buyers off guard. The assumption: Once you've reviewed the FDD and feel confident, you can sign whenever you're ready. The correction: The FTC mandates a 14-day review window before any contract is signed or payment made to the franchisor. The window starts when you receive the FDD, and no franchisor can waive it. If a franchisor pressures you to move faster, treat it as a warning sign. Build the 14-day window into your planning timeline and use it — have a franchise attorney review the document before you commit. Most prospective franchisees know about the FTC's disclosure process. What catches people off guard is that California goes further. The assumption: A franchisor who complies with FTC requirements is cleared to sell franchises in California. The correction: California requires franchisors to register with the state before any franchise can be offered or sold here — including San Diego. The California Department of Financial Protection and Innovation runs its own registration process, and federal FTC compliance doesn't satisfy it. Ask for proof of California registration before moving forward. A reputable franchisor will have it ready. Bottom line: Federal FDD compliance and California state registration are two separate requirements — confirm both before signing anything. SBA-backed loans are a genuine advantage in franchise ownership — one reason financing can be more accessible than for an independent startup. To qualify, the brand must be listed in the SBA Franchise Directory, which includes models the SBA has reviewed for loan eligibility. That listing doesn't mean the government is endorsing the brand as a sound investment — it confirms structural eligibility for SBA loan programs, nothing more. [ ] Read the full FDD — all 23 disclosure items [ ] Confirm the franchisor is registered with the California DFPI [ ] Verify the brand is listed in the SBA Franchise Directory (if seeking SBA financing) [ ] Have a franchise attorney review non-compete clauses and term length [ ] Contact existing franchisees to ask about their day-to-day experience [ ] Model your break-even timeline including royalties, fees, and staffing costs Franchise operations generate significant documentation — royalty reports, audit records, vendor contracts, and tax filings your franchisor may request at any time. Building a document management system early saves headaches later. Saving key documents as PDFs keeps records consistent and easy to share across your team. Rather than maintaining separate files for every report and contract, you can use an extract PDF tool to pull just the pages you need into one clean, consolidated document — this site has more info on how page extraction works in practice. Adobe Acrobat's online PDF extractor is a browser-based tool that handles files up to 500 pages without requiring any software installation. San Diego has active franchise markets across hospitality, retail, health and wellness, and professional services — and the due diligence process doesn't have to be a solo effort. SDEBA membership includes automatic enrollment in the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which connects members to financial and procurement programs for LGBTQ-owned and ally businesses. That network includes entrepreneurs who've already navigated franchise agreements — a resource worth tapping before you sign. Review the FDD, verify California registration, and get a franchise attorney involved early. The structure that makes franchising appealing is only an advantage if you fully understand what you're committing to. Some terms are standardized across all franchisees to protect brand consistency. But territory size, renewal conditions, and transfer rights sometimes have room for discussion, particularly with newer or smaller franchise systems. Involve a franchise attorney before attempting to modify any terms — knowing which clauses have flexibility and which don't is essential. This scenario should be addressed in the FDD under litigation history and financial disclosures. In an acquisition, the new parent may honor existing agreements, renegotiate terms, or phase out the brand. Review the agreement's assignment and change-of-control clauses before signing — they determine your exposure if ownership changes hands. SDEBA membership includes enrollment in the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, which offers procurement programs and connections to financial resources for LGBTQ-owned businesses. While the NGLCC doesn't provide direct lending, its network includes lenders and advisors with experience in minority-owned business financing — relevant when assembling a franchise funding package. Yes. California's registration requirement applies to any franchise offered or sold in the state, regardless of business format — including mobile or home-based models. The California DFPI's requirement is tied to where the franchise is sold, not the type of operation. Verify state registration no matter the format. Before You Sign a Franchise Agreement in San Diego: What Every Entrepreneur Should Know
